Notes from a Roving Radical Behaviorist: Behavioral Bubble Busted in Barcelona

Having had the opportunity to see beginning practitioners of big-bubble technology in Barcelona, I now appreciate the hours and hours of deliberate practice it takes to become a Board Certified Behavioral Bubble Buddy, like Paris’ King of Bubbles. Therefore, we need to add a minimum of 20 hours of preliminary supervised practice, before our practicum students can begin to use the big-bubbles in the discrete trial setting. However, if they like, my practicum students can pick up some spare change in the process by busking their big bubbles on the streets of Kalamazoo during the Art Hops (I’m sure other thoughtful supervisors in other cities can make similar arrangements). And least you become too discouraged in advance, the young man in the kaki pants was was a neophyte volunteer from the audience. After viewing this video, it is recommended that you see the fluency that can be obtained with 10,000 hours of deliberate practice, in the video THE KING OF BUBBLES. R.W. Malott, PhD, BCBA-D.

Europe Is for Lovers
I’ve seen more public displays of affection on the streets of Europe in the last 28 days than I’ve seen in Kalamazoo in the last 43 years. And I’m not talkin’ ‘bout a cheek peck; I’m talkin’ serious smoochin’. Being sensitive, as I am, to other peoples privacy in their public smoochings, I’ve failed to document much of this with photos and none with video, but I have include two photos bellow.

And though the French are famous for their little peck-on-the-cheek greeting kisses, you’ve seen nothing until you see a group of eight Spaniards parting ways for the morning after breakfast in a hotel restaurant. That’s eight people kissing seven people (not including themselves, of course) = 56 kisses (or maybe 112, if you count double-cheek kisses) + the negotiating around each other and the tables in a crowded restaurant. We’re talking 5 to 10 minutes. In Kalamazoo, if we’re feeling especially emotional about the parting, we might throw a goodbye wave over our shoulder. But I don’t mean to imply that these Spanish rituals are emotional; I’ve seen a person give goodbye kisses while talking on a cell phone.

The Bicyclist
This is perhaps the most amazing living state I’ve seen, so amazing that the fact that I only have photos of him and no vids is cool, maybe better. Please check out his photos, bellow.

Barcelona's Lovely Living Statues
A beautiful statue in bronze, a statue in search of a groom or novio, and her protector

The Juggler of Barcelona or What Happened to Dick
Let’s just say interesting.

Homanoid Sex on Display
The weirdest window display I’ve ever seen. And cool too.

A Spanish Guitarist/Singer in Barcelona
A nice traditionalist.

The Barcelona Violin Duet
Sort of a Spanish-gypsy feel.

Fountains of Europe
What can I say.
