Project Description

Behavior Systems Analysis Project (BSAP) is a Research and Development project that is supplemental to Psychology 460.  BSAP is an excellent opportunity to use the information learned in PSY460 in a real-life setting.  The BSAP students will implement real interventions within an organization or business in order to improve the pinpointed issue.  The BSAP system will provide the students with the necessary training and assistance throughout their project to help ensure success for each student.  The BSA project is important because it focuses on hands-on training in the field of Behavior Analysis and Organizational Behavior Management (OBM).

Students will become more familiar with the scientific approach to psychology during their semester. They are then able to apply these approaches within their setting. Students learn how to pinpoint specific behavior, design a measuring system, conduct data collection, design and intervention, calculating and obtaining inter-observer agreement, create a resume/vita, and also how to work effectively and socially in society.

Requirements

  1. Conduct an interview with the business/organization owners/managers to learn about the organization
  2. Identify an area for improvement
  3. Apply the knowledge of six steps of behavior systems analysis learned in PSY 460 to improve the organization
  4. Collect data within that organization as often as the facility manager will allow
  5. Implement an intervention
  6. Follow up on their organizations and work closely with the facility manager and the graduate student supervisor
  7. Click here to see a syllabus, assignment guide, business participation information, business participation form, and an introduction power point.

Meeting Times

Class will meet one night a week for approximately 1 ½ hours, from 6:00-7:30 p.m.  The exact meeting days can be found on GoWMU since they will change with each semester.

General Class Structure

Class will meet once a week for approximately 1 ½ hours to discuss the progress of each student’s individual project. During this time the student will also turn in the homework for the week and view power points that cover various topics to help aid the student.   The class is broken into two groups.  Each week one group will present their individual project data.  During this time the classmates will have the opportunity to give each other suggestions since similar problems may be encountered in multiple projects. The second group will then have the chance to ask the graduate student any questions and state any concerns during a one-on-one meeting. This class structure allows for students to have more individual time with the instructor.

Outside of class each student should be putting in the necessary amount of time needed to properly observe the behaviors at their business or organization.  The amount of time necessary is generally just a couple hours each week.  The amount of time of outside observation will depend on the pinpoint selected by the student.
