Psy 3570 Practicum with Special Populations

  • Croyden Playground
PSY 3570 is a 3 credit-hour practicum for undergraduate psychology majors and minors interested in using behavioral technology to help teach children with autism at the pre-kindergarten level.
    • The practicum is completed at Croyden Avenue School in Kalamazoo.
    • The autism classroom uses a discrete trial format as the basis for teaching.
    • Each practicum student is a tutor for one child and spends two hours per day from Monday through Friday working with their child one-on-one.
    • A large focus of the autism classroom at Croyden is to teach each child skills such as attending, matching, and modeling that children with autism do not learn as readily as their normal peers.
    • The children in the classroom exhibit varying levels of behavioral problems and crucial life and learning skills deficits.
    • The behavioral method is the most effective method for correcting current undesirable behaviors and teaching positive new skills for the child's future ability to function in school and society.
